چکیده

INTRODUCTION — Conventional mechanical ventilation refers to the delivery of full or partial ventilatory support by a volume-cycled mechanical ventilator or by pressure support. It also can include the maintenance of positive airway pressure at the end of exhalation, ie, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) [1]. (See "Physiologic and pathophysiologic consequences of positive pressure ventilation").

Comparison of airway pressure release ventilation to conventional mechanical ventilation in the early management of smoke inhalation injury in swine.

OBJECTIVE The role of airway pressure release ventilation in the management of early smoke inhalation injury has not been studied. We compared the effects of airway pressure release ventilation and conventional mechanical ventilation on oxygenation in a porcine model of acute respiratory distress syndrome induced by wood smoke inhalation. DESIGN Prospective animal study. SETTING Government ...

Comparison between conventional protective mechanical ventilation and high-frequency oscillatory ventilation associated with the prone position

OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and conventional protective mechanical ventilation associated with the prone position on oxygenation, histology and pulmonary oxidative damage in an experimental model of acute lung injury. METHODS Forty-five rabbits with tracheostomy and vascular access were underwent mechanical ventilation. Acute lung injury was indu...

Noninvasive vs conventional mechanical ventilation in acute respiratory failure: a multicenter, randomized controlled trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVE Noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) is beneficial for patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) when added to medical treatment. However, its role as an alternative to conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) remains controversial. Our aim was to compare the efficacy and resource consumption of NIMV against CMV in patients with ARF. DESIGN A randomized, multicenter,...

The use of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in the emergency department: results of a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE To determine whether the use of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in the emergency department (ED) will reduce the need for tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. DESIGN Randomized, controlled, prospective clinical trial. SETTING ED of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, a university-affiliated teaching hospital. PATIENTS Twenty-seven patients meeting a predetermined...

Respiratory controversies in the critical care setting. Does high-frequency ventilation offer benefits over conventional ventilation in adult patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome?

High-frequency ventilation is the application of mechanical ventilation with a respiratory rate > 100 breaths/min. High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) is the form of high-frequency ventilation most widely used in adult critical care. The principles of lung-protective ventilation have matured in parallel with the technology for HFOV. The 2 basic principles of lung-protective ventilatio...
